ASTM splash rating is based on standards set by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM). This rating indicates the risk of fluid exposure from splashes or sprays. The ASTM splash rating is designated by three levels: Level 1 (low barrier protection), Level 2 (moderate barrier protection) or Level 3 (maximum barrier protection).

NIOSH rating, developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), indicates how effective the respirator is at filtering aerosols and protecting the wearer. The NIOSH rating has three classifications indicating the respirator’s resistance to oil-based aerosols (N – not resistant to oil, R – resistant to oil, P – oil proof), along with its minimum efficiency percent (e.g. N95).
